Faking it

The Myth

A friend of mine came and helped me out recently at the clinic and was doing bit of reception work just to do me a favour. She turned to me and said  "Wow, I'm really surprised by the type of people that come and see you."  Now, this friend of mine does not have any kind of treatments. I asked her  "What do you mean by that?" And she said, "Well, they're just all really nice and really normal." I replied, "Well, what the hell were you expecting? Of course they're nice and of course they're norma!" We explored her comments, it was  her perception  that the people I treat were either going to be all completely full of themselves and ‘think they're it’, to use her own terminology, or completely overdone and looking ridiculous.

Reasons for

I thought it was interesting, this stigma that I think people who have never experienced any treatments think about people that do have treatments. I have talked many times before, about my ‘sanity, vanity’ rationale. There are many different reasons why someone might come for a treatment, why you might be thinking of coming for a treatment, and being full of yourself or being in love yourself, I am yet to come across that client. Most of the people that I see, this is not the driver and this is not the kind of person that they are. In my humble opinion, people come for a number of different reasons. In my humble experience people do not want to look 20 years younger.

I want to look good for my age.

I have a handful of clients that have a certain image, I guess, that they are trying to achieve certain look, a certain image.

I have clients that come to treat a specific problem or a condition.

I have clients that come, in preparation for an event: a wedding, a birthday.

Essentially it all comes back to wanting to make yourself feel better or feel as good as you can. For me, this is the main reason that people seek these treatments. Personally I believe that these are all very valid reasons to have a treatment. I think most of the things that we do in life are to make us feel better.

The Confidence Factor

If we consider confidence building, it really depends on the context, of what the situation is that is making you feel unconfident. I think that feeling unconfident is a very, very common feeling and it is one that most of us have to deal with, and I think that you have to try and find ways to manage it. If you are unable to manage it then it can limit you. There are lots of things that can make us feel less confident than we would like to be. One of them is the way that we look, but there are many other factors. Feeling as though you do not know as much as you should do, or that you lack experience in something , perhaps you feel that others are liked more than you, have a bigger social media following.

So I think most of us have a common feeling about faking it, whatever aspects of our life it is, whether we are faking it at work or faking it as a friend or faking it as a wife or a husband. When I say ‘faking it’ I just mean that feeling a little unconfident in aspects of our lives. This is  really normal. There are lots of things that I feel unconfident about and there are lots of things that I do to try and manage that side of myself.

Confidence hacks

So the things that I do to try and manage confidence are all things aimed at making me feel better. That makes sense, agreed? For example, I do quite a lot of exercise. I do a lot of exercise because I think that helps deal with the stress in my body and helps to release the endorphins and achieving that general feel-good factor, I believe exercise has a beneficial effect on everything, breathing, positivity, stress relief in addition to all the physical health benefits.

Another confidence hack is to try to  eat well.  Now by this I do not mean crazy fad diets you give after one week, I am talking reducing processed food, cutting out empty calories. Eating nutritious food and drinking water and just having awareness of what you are putting in your body so that it will function at the optimal level. If your body is not experiencing surges of blood sugar and having to shoot out loads of insulin it re chaos going on inside your body. Everything's on a nice even keel, so it makes you just feel better and if you feel better, you feel better.

Another one for me is spending time with friends or if I am not able to see them, having a phone conversation where you can talk about how you feel. Having those conversations when you are feeling a bit uncertain about something, a bit unsure of yourself, they can be tough. So there might only be one or two people that you can talk to about those kinds of things, but again, talking just helps you feel better on that front as well. So I think that one is up there.

And then again, I would say that physically looking after myself makes me feel more confident. I am never going to be winning any beauty competitions, I have never been that girl. But I can make the best of myself, I can make the best of my features, and that helps me to present myself to the world in a slightly more confident way as well. I am a sucker for clothes and fashion, which is  another thing I do because it helps me present myself in the way that I want to.

To treat or not to treat?

So my point is this: how you feel about yourself and things that bother you about yourself can really only be identified by yourself. It does not really matter what other people think or say and how other people can judge you, but if you can identify the things that do bother you, then maybe we can help with you managing them. Because why the hell not?

Quite simply treatments are about making you feel better. Looking better can help to make you feel better. The ‘feel’ is the motivator, the driver. To feel less tired, to feel less saggy, to feel less grumpy. Those are the key things that we are trying to tap into with a view to getting you to feel more confident, more happy, more positive. Bring us your problem and we will provide your solution. Simple!
