Chemical Skin Peels: The Perfect Treatment For Autumn / Winter

What are they? When you think of chemical skin peels do you think about the peels you have seen on reality TV programmes? The image of someone having a treatment that results in the skin on their face literally shedding away, leaving red raw skin underneath? Once healed, these peels can produce good results but to get there you need to have a week off work and stay indoors which for most people just isn’t practical, in addition to the inconvenience, the risk of infection and scarring is significant. Superficial chemical skin peels are the most commonly used peels nowadays. These peels are milder, which can mean that the results are less dramatic, but also means that no downtime is required and the risks of unwanted effects are minimised.
Chemical skin peels work by ‘burning ‘off the top layer of skin (the epidermis), to reveal ‘new’ skin. The type of product used depends on your age, skin type and any specific conditions you may wish to target. In some cases a combination of different products ,may be used. Chemical skin peels can be a great introductory aesthetic treatment for those of you who do not wish to alter the structure of your face, wish to retain full facial expression or are simply fearful of the concept of injecting the face. As well as improving the appearance of fine lines and brightening the skin chemical skin peels can be used to treat the appearance of acne, uneven pigmentation conditions such as Melasma and Rosacea

What happens?
Most of the consultation is spent assessing your needs and discussing the ‘peel plan’. Rationale®does recommend pre and post peel skin regimes which will optimise the results you will get from the peel but are not essential. Chemical peels consist of a course of treatments so having 1 peel as a single treatment is really unlikely to effect any noticeable result. Usually 3 treatments are recommended with 1 month in between each one, some people will benefit from 2 courses of 3.
LPA uses Procedure® skin peels. Once you have been assessed and the ‘peel plan’ is agreed, your face will be cleansed to remove makeup or dirt and then ‘degreased’ using an alcohol wipe. The peel itself is a liquid that is simply applied all over the face using a cotton bud. At your first peel appointment you will generally expect to receive 1 layer of the peel. At the 2nd and 3rdappointment you may receive multiple layers of peel depending on how well your skin has tolerated and responded to the treatment. The procedure is painless and quick; sometimes you can experience a mild tingling sensation. Once the peel has been fully applied the treatment is completed with application of SPF. Following your peel you may experience slight flaking or redness and you must not pick or pull at any loose skin. It is essential to use at least an SPF 25 following treatment (LPA Limited recommends this to all clients regardless of treatments) .UV exposure is best avoided during peel treatments making chemical skin peels a great autumn / winter treatment.
